Bishop William Morris
speaks out
about the Dammann trial
in the Pacific Northwest Conference.
The Dammann Trial has placed some challenges before the
Church. As a denomination, the General Conference has stated that
“homosexual persons no less than heterosexual persons are individuals of
sacred worth” and that “although we do not condone the practice of
homosexuality and consider this practice incompatible with Christian
teaching, we affirm that God’s grace is available to all. (Discipline
Para. 161 G)
The Church has also stated that “Since the practice of
homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching, self avowed
practicing homosexuals are not to be accepted as candidates, ordained as
ministers, or appointed to serve in the United Methodist Church.
(Discipline Para 304.4) The position of the Church is very clear and I
affirm and support the Discipline of the United Methodist Church.
In light of what has happened, I have requested that
both delegations of the Nashville Area go to General Conference prepared
to take whatever steps necessary to correct the present situation.
As we move toward General Conference, I am asking each
member and pastor to do the following:
1. To pray for the General Conference that
decisions will be made that leave no doubt about where we stand as a
denomination;
2. To
pray for the Nashville Area delegations that they will represent the
people of the Area in their voting and decision making;
3. To
continue to support your church and the pastor as we move through this
storm.
I would also remind you that we are not alone for “God
is our refuge and strength and a very present help in the time of
trouble.” Psalm 46:1.
