In the summer of 2001, the United Methodist Church launched a nationwide media campaign. McUMC was on the crest of this wave of media technology. Our board authorized the creation of several radio spots and purchased air time on the local radio station, 99.1 WCBL-AM/FM. A few weeks into our relationship with WCBL, Jim Freeland mentioned that a Sunday morning slot was opening up on WCBL. It had been an hour long worship service provided by one of the local churches. He asked if one of our churches would be interested in filling the spot. We had no churches in McUMC with services that fit the radio broadcast schedule, so the idea went away for a while.

Days later, as McUMC continued to explore options for media involvement, some information came to light on a nationally syndicated radio program sponsored in part by the United Methodist Church. The Board did a little research and discovered that the Protestant Hour would be a great addition to the WCBL lineup. There was only one problem: The Protestant Hour was only thirty minutes long. We would have to fill the other thirty minutes of the slot. The show's producers hit upon the idea of a round table discussion with local people sharing thoughts and ideas. The idea slowly began to gather steam, and today its a regular part of the WCBL lineup.

In the Summer of 2002, The Protestant Hour became DAY 1. Now, Marshall Countians may listen to the DAY 1 weekly radio program on WCBL FM each Sunday morning at 9:30am, and THE DAY 1 FOLLOWUP program at 10:00am. DAY 1 is hosted byRev. Peter Wallace, Host of the Day 1 program Executive Producer Rev. Peter Wallace and features some of the country's finest preachers. Day 1 is the voice of the mainline Protestant churches, presenting outstanding preachers from the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Episcopal Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), United Church of Christ, United Methodist Church, and other denominations. Our website features an extensive library of lectionary-based sermons in text and audio, and other helpful information for lay persons and pastors.
Day1 began broadcasting in 1945 as "The Protestant Hour" and has been on the air every week since, currently on more than 200 stations. Day1 is a ministry of the Alliance for Christian Media, a nonprofit mainline media ministry based in Atlanta, GA. The Alliance was created after the merger of The Protestant Hour, Inc. and the Episcopal Media Center, which was founded in 1945 and originally called The Episcopal Radio and TV Foundation. The Alliance for Christian Media has been instrumental in producing Emmy-winning TV programming such as "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" and "Shadowlands."
If you would like to learn more about the Alliance, feel free to visit our website at: http://www.allianceforchristianmedia.org

McUMC sponsors this hour-long program on WCBL, and produces the last thirty minutes of the hour time-slot. The DAY 1 FOLLOW UP program A panel precisely prepares its pointed ponderings...features a discussion by a panel of local pastors and laypersons. This local panel discusses the sermon and how the message applies to the Marshall County listener. We've had many different participants on the DAY 1 FOLLOW UP program, and the list is growing almost every week. Anyone interested in participating in one of the upcoming shows should contact McUMC's offices at 527-5147.

With a new studio in the McUMC Learning Center, the program's quality is better than ever. Plans to expand the coverage to include radio stations in Calvert City and perhaps even Ballard County are still underway.

Beginning May 29, 2011 McUMC will provide the Day1 Follow Up Program online here by clicking on the Day1 Follow Up Program logo below. This will enable anyone who failed to listen to the Day1 Follow Up Program when it orginally airs on WCBL at 10:00 AM of the previous Sunday morning to hear all that was said. We are hoping this new service will be widely accepted by the listening public. Please email us at Contact the Followup Program and let us know what you think of this new service.

For more information on these and other aspects of your McUMC Cooperative Ministry, contact Jerri Cross at 270 527-5147.
